Winterizing Your Home to Save Energy and Money
By Guest Blogger Melissa Katz
There are months that I look at my energy bill and think the total amount due has to be a typo. Last time I checked, I don’t live with all the doors and windows open! As my Thanksgiving resolution, I decided I am going to winterize my home with an eye for saving energy and money.
I found a great article in Popular Mechanics on tips for winterizing my home, and I thought I would share some of my favorites for those who prefer to skim. For links or details, click here http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/interior-projects/how-to/g52/winterize-home-tips-energy-461008/
- Change furnace filters
- Run fans in reverse
- Winterize your A/C and water lines
- Turn down the water heater
- Install storm doors and windows
- Keep your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted to reduce energy use, saving up to 5 percent of heating costs
- Turn down the heat when you leave
- Pick up a window insulation kit at your local hardware or discount store
- Use an Energy Monitor
- Use Caulking and Weatherstripping
- Add more insulation between walls, attic floor and basement ceiling
- Dress warmer for winter, even inside
- Insulate your pipes
- Seal the ducts
- Take advantage of tax credits by installing renewable energy
- Choose the right contractor to perform your own energy audit
Stay warm this winter and use all that savings to go someplace warm!!
