Habitat Bucks Launches A Brush With Kindness

Habitat for Humanity Kicks Off A Brush with Kindness July 21, 22, 23…

[Bucks County, PA] – Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County is pleased to announce the organization’s new initiative

“Serving People-Preserving Homes-Revitalizing Neighborhoods”

Chalfont, PA- Please join Habitat for Humanity on July 21st for the Kick Off event with over 50 volunteers national partner Lowe’s along with The Jones Group, Johnson Controls and HFHBC Woman Build Program. Based on a need for women to support women and families, the organization launched this initiative in 2005, with 638 women contributing 12,172 hours and raising over $442,000.

Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit that provides affordable housing to low income families locally and internationally, is pleased to announce the first Revitalization Program to preserve affordable housing in the Bucks County community. Since 1990 Habitat Bucks has partnered with 86 families for homeownership. Of those, 45 are headed solely by single mothers. An amazing 159 children and young adults have benefited from the HFH homeownership program.

A Brush with Kindness: How does it work? Volunteer teams, led by professionally trained construction staff, work to improve the condition of the homes by providing minor exterior repairs and improvements at minimal costs to homeowners who would be unable to complete home repairs on their own, according to Executive Director, Kelly Clarke. “This three day volunteer event will culminate in a beautifully refurbished home for a senior citizen, who has lived in her home for the past 44 years. She is an empty nester who has raised four children and helps to raise her grandchildren, while volunteering with her church and community center.”

“I am amazed by the tremendous dedication, passion, energy and talent that our volunteers bring to each project that commit to on behalf of their neighbors. Not only do volunteers share their valuable time and resources with us, but continue to invest in these communities whether monetarily or on a more personal level give children and families the basic right to have a roof over their heads.” said Clarke

Nickels for Nails – Small Change makes Big Change

Local Students Support “Nickels for Nails” Program

Seventh grade students from the Holicong Middle School set up a table outside their cafeteria for a week telling people about Habitat for Humanity in Bucks County and collecting change. Then they practiced writing persuasive letters to family, friends, and local businesses. Their efforts really paid off, and they were able to donate over $700 to support building affordable homes in Bucks County. The 7th graders invited Debbie Lynch, Resource Development Director for Habitat Bucks, to their school where they played Habitat trivia and saw a presentation on the needs for affordable housing in Bucks County, and how young people can make a difference. “It was great to see so many engaged young people ready to help by collecting change!” said Ms. Lynch.

Pine Run Elementary participated in “Nickels for Nails” by using materials provided by Habitat Bucks. Each classroom participated in activities such as Habitat Bingo, word search sheets, math sheets, and art projects to help raise awareness of how important ‘home’ is to the success of children in school and to the family and community at large. Teacher Lu Reed remarked “it was great to see these students and their families open their hearts to help make sure that there are affordable homes for everyone in Bucks County. We look forward to participating again next year, and hope to get some of our students out to a construction site as well, to see the volunteers in action.” Students at Pine Run collected over $1300 for Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County.

Habitat for Humanity raises walls on Dow-supported home!

Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County will raise a wall and break ground on the Colonial Avenue homebuilding site in Bristol tomorrow, May 26, at 12noon, during a luncheon. Habitat is building in partnership with The Dow Chemical Company, who is donating volunteer hours, financial support and state-of-theart energy efficient building materials.

In keeping with Habitat for Humanity’s green building initiatives, the four townhomes on Colonial Avenue will be built to meet ENERGY STAR® standards and to receive the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) National Green Building Program™ Silver rating. These certifications mean that future homeowners will not only be purchasing a safe and affordable home, but also an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly one. Families’ utility bills will be greatly reduced by Habitat for Humanity’s green building, with projections of 25-to-40% savings.

Key to the energy savings is Dow’s donation of STYROFOAM SIS™ Brand Structural Insulated Sheathing, a three-in-one solution that provides homes with structure for exterior walls, continuous insulation and water resistance, all without the need for wood sheathing and housewrap. Made of up to 80% post-consumer recycled content by weight, STYROFOAM SIS™ is also ENERGY STAR®-qualified.

On hand for the wall raising and a groundbreaking will be representatives from Dow and Habitat for Humanity staff, volunteers, and board members. Come out for some great photo opportunities! Directions to the Colonial Avenue homebuilding site from Interstate 276 are below:

Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program is about creating opportunities for women. Women and their children are disproportionately affected by poverty and substandard housing and through receiving training in construction skills women are able to feel confident working in what is traditionally a male-dominated field while creating affordable housing opportunities for those in need in their community. For more information on the Women Build program, please contact Laura McClellan at l.mcclellan@habitatbucks.org or 215-822-221804 x302.

It is the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County to build affordable homes, better lives, stronger families, and safer communities through partnerships with people and organizations throughout Bucks County. We bring individuals, families and communities together to build affordable homes with those in need. We are a Christian ministry that calls on all people regardless of religious preference or cultural background to make safe, simple, affordable housing a matter of conscience and action in Bucks County.

Each home Habitat for Humanity builds in Bucks County requires a commitment of 2000 volunteer hours, financial contributions of $115 per square foot, and the dedication of innumerable individuals speaking on behalf of the program. Habitat relies strictly on the generosity and commitment of our neighbors and partner families to provide these resources. 2010.04.19: Home Dedication and Open House scheduled!

Join us in welcoming home the first THREE FAMILIES to the Stitchery!

The joy gained in witnessing another’s happiness is nearly unmatched in its simplicity and greatness — join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of our newest Habitat for Humanity homeowner families at our next House Dedication, Saturday, May 15 at 4 pm. We will be welcoming the very first homeowners in our “green” building, the Stitchery: Brandon Strouse, T’Wonda Saunders and Patty Hunter.

Previously the Hubbert baseball factory, and most recently the Perkasie Senior Center, the Stitchery represents Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County’s first ever “adaptive reuse” project. Habitat converted the building into six fully contained condominium units on three floors, two of which are handicap accessible. In keeping with Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County’s building goals, the Stitchery hopes to meet ENERGY STAR® standards and receive a NAHB National Green Building Program™ rating. Constance Lezenby, AIA, a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor, assisted Habitat with the final designs and code review for this project.

We will welcome the newest homeowners and their families during a brief dedication ceremony; immediately following, the homes will be open to tour and light refreshments will be available. The event is open to the public – friends and neighbors are encouraged to attend! Attendees of the event may “pound” our families by bringing a pound of non-perishable goods, such as food or a cleaning product, to give to the new families. Come celebrate with us!

2010.04.12: Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on Thrivent-supported home!

Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County recently broke ground on a new homebuilding site on Liberator Street in Levittown. Habitat is building this home in partnership with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, who awarded the affiliate with a home sponsorship for the 2010 calendar year. On hand for the groundbreaking included representatives from Lower Bucks Lutheran Churches, members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, leaders from local Lutheran Churches, and board and staff members from Habitat for Humanity.

“We’re honored to be selected by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the local Lutheran Churches in Bucks County for a full house sponsorship of a Habitat home in Bucks County. Thrivent has partnered with Habitat for Humanity International over the past five years with a combined financial commitment of over $125 million dollars. The homebuilding program at Liberator Street would not be happening right now without the full sponsorship of Thrivent and the local Lutheran churches,” says Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County Resource Development Director, Billy Dunn.

2010.03.24: Habitat for Humanity hosts empowering and fun Girls Build event!

The Girl Scouts of Eastern PA (GSEP) and Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County recently held an educational, interactive and empowering event for 26 girls between the ages of 10 and 12, as part of Habitat’s newly launched Girls Build program. Participants of the workshop moved between sessions, building cedar bird feeders, creating a piece of a Girls Build banner, learning hands-on about Habitat for Humanity by putting on hard hats to construct a paper house, teaching the girls about each step of building a home. The girls also heard from guest speakers, members of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC): Maura Hesdon, a project manager for Shoemaker Construction; Jaime Leitch, a director for American Infrastructure; and Christine Workman, a manager for Otis Elevator.

“The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction is thrilled to be a part of this exciting opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity to not only expose these young women to the construction industry; but also, to enrich a family by providing a home for them. The girls will gain insight into home ownership as well as self-confidence and knowledge in construction techniques to build on as they grow into the strong leaders of the future,” said Hesdon, president of the NAWIC Phila Chapter 145.

The Girls Build mission is to work in partnership with youth organizations to educate preteen girls about homeownership, Habitat for Humanity, community needs and the ways in which girls and women can actively meet those needs. The Girls Build Program has five modules designed to easily be presented by youth organizations, summer camps, afterschool programs, and faith groups. The curriculum encourages girls to expand their vision of what they can do and become, such as pursuing a career in construction industry. For more information about Habitat for Humanity and the Girls Build program, please contact Laura McClellan at l.mcclellan@habitatbucks.org or (215) 822.2812 x302.

2010.02.24: Local politicians help celebrate Colonial Avenue “green home” groundbreaking!

Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County recently broke ground at their newest green homebuilding site on Colonial Avenue in Bristol. Several local politicians and Habitat for Humanity staff posed for a ceremonial snapshot wearing hard hats and with shovels in hand.

“In its 20th year, Habitat for Humanity continues to help our neighbors rebuild their lives every day, and I’m proud to have been a part of the groundbreaking,” said Congressman Patrick Murphy. Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County President Jennifer Stark expressed the organization’s excitement to be building in Bristol again, after spending the past nine years in the northern end of the county, “It’s fantastic to be returning to our roots in Bristol, where we broke ground on the very first Habitat for Humanity home in Bucks County in 1994.”

The affiliate plans to begin construction on the four Colonial Avenue townhomes in the spring, and is committed to following local and national green building guidelines. In addition to meeting ENERGY STAR® standards, the homes will be built to receive the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) National Green Building Program™ Silver rating, with ambition to achieve a Gold rating. These certifications mean that homeowners will not only be purchasing safe, decent and affordable homes, but also energy-efficient and environmentally friendly ones. Families’ utility bills will be greatly reduced by the green building, with projections of a 25-to-40% savings.

The total estimated cost for construction of the project is estimated at $700,000. Habitat for Humanity is currently fundraising for these homes, which will be sold at-cost to families in the community.

“It provides an opportunity for low-income families who work hard to increase their independence and economic wellbeing,” says Bristol Township Community Development Director Thomas McDermott of Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program.

Bristol Township Mayor John Monahan also expressed his approval of the homebuilding program, “I am in support of these efforts by Habitat for Humanity to build affordable homes, better lives, stronger families, and safer communities here in Bucks County.” Learn more about the Bucks County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity at our website.
